A garden studio with a view! We’ve really enjoyed working on this design concept in North Oxford. Our client approached us with a somewhat challenging brief on a slightly unusual site. A wonderful modernist house – the main living spaces are at first floor level, which offers bright spaces with elevated views, but an unfortunate disconnect from the garden. As a result, the generous south-facing garden remains under-used, so there is a strong desire to connect to its direct sunlight and greenery.
To navigate the odd shape of the site boundary, a wedge-shaped plan gradually fans out. The building is made up of three blocks that step up in both height and materiality. First, a glazed link connects lightly to the main house, stepping up to a more solid service core containing the utilitarian elements (WC, storage, corridor), before reaching a tall bright space housing a studio / multi-function room with glazed views to the garden and sky, and gorgeous brickwork that nods to the main house.
We offer a carefully considered bespoke architects’ design service, rather than a cookie-cutter approach, specialising in low energy and ecological design. Get in touch if you have a project you’d like to discuss.
