Happy Nowruz and Spring Equinox! As the days grow longer, we start the new year and new season with an eventful week. We welcome our new colleague Victoria to Sow Space, along with our work experience student Siyana who’s with us all week. We’ve arranged a number of visits as an introduction to the world of low impact and sustainable architecture, kicking off with a visit to FarmED – “a living textbook of regenerative farming on a 107 acre demonstration farm in the Cotswolds”.
We were given a tour of the farm by MD Ian Wilkinson, who spoke about the importance of farming methods on soil health and its impact on biodiversity and climate resilience. We had the opportunity to experience the wonderfully designed and detailed buildings by Timothy Tasker Architects, including a new building under construction using both hempcrete blocks and cast-in situ. A quite extraordinary material, hempcrete has excellent thermal, humidity, acoustic, and fire / mould-resistant properties.
As architects who specialise in sustainable design, we strive to use the lowest impact materials and construction methods. We’d love to use hempcrete – get in touch if you have a project where you’d like to explore this or any other sustainable form of construction with us.
