Construction starts on our refurb and retrofit project! This 1970s large detached house in the Headington Hill Conservation Area was progressively extended over the years, including a fully glazed rear extension, which in our opinion was a big mistake. Not only did the space significantly overheat, generally but especially during a heatwave like this, the glazing failed and caused the roof to leak. What was intended as a bright living space was never fit for purpose and now sadly needs to be replaced.
In place of the glazed pitched roof, we’ve designed a solid flat roof packed with insulation, which will keep the heat out to stop the room from overheating, and also create a much more consistent height throughout the space. The windows and doors, which also failed, will be replaced with high performance triple-glazed units. To go a step further to reduce overheating, we’ve designed a roof overhang that incorporates electrically operated external blinds to provide much needed shading.
The heatwave we’re experiencing right now will only become more common in the near future. We need to design spaces that can cope with extreme weather. Get in touch if you’d like to work with architects who understand how to create both beautiful and comfortable buildings.
