3D rendered images showing front of bungalow before and after proposal of extended roof with cedar shingle cladding

Planning permission granted! As a follow up on a previous post, we gained approval for this bungalow roof extension and retrofit in a small idyllic village in North Oxfordshire. Sitting on an elevated site with views across the rolling hills, the existing property fails to take advantage of these. We managed to fit three bedrooms and two bathrooms in the roof, with each bedroom gaining sightlines towards the landscape. Reconfiguration of the ground floor offers a much improved connection to the garden.

Sitting in a prominent position on the edge of a conservation area, planning permission was not straightforward, as we engaged in negotiations with the planning officer. With requests to omit the cedar shingle cladding and reduce the dormers, we managed to retain these key design features that our client longed for, while appeasing the planning department. A successful outcome as we now progress with stage 4 technical design, considering how wood fibre insulation will keep the spaces cool in summer.

As architects, we have the skills to navigate design and planning challenges. As specialists in retrofit, we love to make existing buildings comfortable to use that tread lightly on the environment. Get in touch if you have a project you’d like to discuss with us.
